Windlasses

The Windlasses were formed in 1967, and currently have over 120 members. This is a women' s sailing association open to sailing enthusiasts in the area. The purpose of the organization is to encourage women sailors to improve their art of sailing, to sponsor races, cruise in Prams and Sunfish, and to compete with other women' s sailing clubs on the Florida Gulf Coast.

For the Dunedin Cup the Windlasses will sail just to the West of the Dunedin Boat Club where they sail every Thursday throughout the school year. Spectators may watch the sailors setting up their boats and may view the races from the shoreline at the Dunedin Boat Club. Due to limited parking on the "water side" spectators should park on the East side of the marina basin. The racing is on a triangular course near shore and provides for great viewing. Binoculars are also useful. Racing most likely will be between 1 P.M. and 3:30 P.M. with approximately 20 boats participating.

The Optimist pram was designed and built in Dunedin Florida in 1955 and was designed by Clarke Mills. Today there are Optimist Pram fleets in 110 countries around the world, with more than 150,000 sailors sailing these wonderful little vessels. The Opti is just 8 feet long, 3' 8" wide and weighs 77 pounds!

The other boat the Windlasses sail is the well know Sunfish, with a length of 14 feet, beam of 4' 1" , and weighing in at 129 pounds.
